New Business

There were 6 incident reports submitted to the committee this month:

  1. An assistant coach suffered a torn Achilles tendon during a scrimmage. No recommended corrective action [RCA].
  2. A custodian suffered a strained back while bending over to pick up paper. RCA: employee was advised to bend knees when picking things up.
  3. A Stetson employee cut finger while unfolding a metal sawhorse. RCA: sawhorse was examined, employee advised to use more caution.
  4. A snack bar employee suffered an ankle sprain while carrying a crate. Ankle twisted on loose gravel. RCA: employee cautioned to be more careful, to slow down.
  5. A Dining Services employee cut finger while chopping vegetables. Employee looked away and cut through glove into finger. RCA: slow down, pay attention, use chopping block.
  6. A security officer suffered a deep contusion on arm after attempting to stop a student, from sneaking back into a party after being asked to leave. Officer slipped on wet floor and hit arm on open doorway. No RCA.

Additional New Business

  • Pat reported employee concerns over the MRSA staph infection. Joe advised regular hand washing.
  • Pat reported concerns over slipperiness of steps up to Vogt due to wet leaves. Joe replied that it is unfeasible to keep walks and steps continuously clear of leaves, and that if people know the stairs are slippery they should exercise extra caution.
  • Pat reported concerns over collisions due to up and down traffic to and from the Mears basement break room. Wondered if a mirror could be installed at the bend in the stairs. Joe replied that the door to the stairs is a fire door and should be kept closed, therefore the opening of the door should alert ascending employees.
  • Jean reported that a staff person at Stetson was concerned with dogs roaming loose in the hallways and wandering into open rooms. Adriana said we should revisit the dogs-on-campus policy. Joe said he would bring issue to Campus Safety Committee.
  • Jean reported concern from Stetson employees over safety of the tunnel with construction vehicles driving over or near it. Joe replied that the contractors were aware of the tunnel, it had been examined carefully before and after blasting and was more likely than not deep enough to not be affected. However, he will check on it.
  • Marty Walden will replace Scott Duncan after our next meeting.
