Employee Safety Committee Meeting Tuesday, March 23, 2004
Attending: George Aitken, Janet Bartlett, Cheryl Brewer, Bob Briggs, Kim Brown, Michael Chapman, Kris Maloney, Joe Moran, Dennis Richard, Judi Willette
Absent: Cosmo Catalano, Adriana Cozzolino, Judy Kocsis, Gary Lohnes, Pete Mazzacco, Michelle Migdal, Norm Parker
Old Business:
- Portable defibrillators: Two units have been received and will be placed in Security cruisers, personnel will be trained.
- CPR course offering: Bob will survey to determine need for another course this spring.
New Business:
Accident Reports submitted to the committee this month:
Ten injuries were reported (the first four were preliminary):
- A nurse strained a shoulder while rolling a patient over.
- A library employee injured a hip.
- A security officer's foot was run over when the driver of an illegally parked car tried to quickly move the car to make way for an ambulance.
- A Dining Services employee lacerated a finger cleaning a dish machine necessitating stitches.
- An electrician, while moving a crate, dropped it on his foot. Follow up: true accident.
- A Security officer sprained an ankle. Follow up: true accident.
- A custodian suffered bruised and scraped elbows. Follow up: true accident.
- A Dining Services employee suffered a back injury while standing on a window sill. Follow up: pending.
- A tradesman moving a motor jack hit a broom which in turn hit him on the cheek. Follow up: True accident.
- A staff member suffered a contusion slipping on ice. Follow up: true accident.
Additional New Business:
- Norm e-mailed Joe two responses to his solicitations for comments from the library staff. The first concerned the location of the handrail on the ramp from the Upper Chapel Parking Lot to Hopkins. Joe will look into it.
- The second comment concerned possible offering of a "Sit Right" seminar by Dr. May for the Library Staff. There followed some discussion which concluded with the decision that Joe will follow up with Norm to determine interest, funding, etc.
- Joe said there have been some problems at the new parking garage with skaters and bands (taking advantage of the acoustics) and noted that Security should be notified immediately about any problems.
- Judi wondered if the cigarette receptacles were coming back. Joe said he should be informed where people think they are needed.
- A member of the Committee commented on seeing B&G workers pruning bushes without eye protection. Joe will follow up.
- Judi commented that snow accumulates at the end of the walkway at the west entrance to Chapin and often refreezes into ice after being treated with ice melt. Joe will follow up.
- Bob suggested sprucing up the Committee website with safety quizzes or weekly tips. Committee members were encouraged to bring back issues to the next meeting, especially tips and information to pass on to the rest of the college.
Dining Services Safety Committee:
- Joe left a message with Bob, but as of our meeting had not heard back.
Next meeting: Tuesday, April 20 at The Faculty House.
