Employee Safety Committee Meeting

Tuesday, March 22, 2005 @ Buildings & Grounds

Attending: Janet Bartlett, Cheryl Brewer, Bob Briggs, Kim Brown, Michael Chapman, Adriana Cozzolino, Gary Lohnes, Kris Maloney, Norm Parker, Dennis Richard, Judi Willette

Absent: George Aitken, Cosmo Catalano, Judy Kocsis, Pete Mazzacco, Michelle Migdal, Joe Moran

Old Business:

  • There was a work order for the slop sink in Stetson to be fixed and I have been informed it is completed.
  • Jeannette Kopczynski has informed Joe that an Assistant Manager has been hired and one of his duties will be training wait staff. Proper lifting will be included in that training.
  • Correct accident reporting procedures were reviewed at the last Greylock staff meeting.
  • Greylock did get a special tool for opening 5-gallon pails.
  • Erwin reviewed using proper containers for transporting hot liquids.

New Business:
Incident Reports submitted to the committee this month:

  1. An Animal Care Technician (Morley Science) strained her left shoulder and arm when a part of a wash rack from a cage fell off. She tried to catch it. The screws became lose over time. B and G repaired it and the department will look into a more permanent solution...like locked screws.
  2. A Human Resources employee strained her left shoulder. She went to the doctors and he said she had Bursitis. Changes were made to her work station.
  3. A B&G employee visited the Dr. for sore and swollen hands. An EMG showed carpel tunnel syndrome. He will undergo a second nerve test and possibly surgery.
  4. A dining services wait staff person suffered a bruise on her left knee from slipping on a wet floor. Water caused from out door traffic bringing in snow. Signage and mopping up the floor more often were recommended.
  5. A Security Officer bumped his head while in the process of shutting off a sprinkler water valve due to a broken pipe. The space as very confined with lots of pipes at different heights. Recommended to slow down and try to be more careful.
  6. A B & G grounds man cut his hand while trying to cut off an old basketball net. Deemed he wasn’t paying attention.
  7. A student assistant sprained his thumb while taking a book truck off the elevator. The elevator was not even with the floor. The elevator needs to be checked.
  8. A cook suffered burns to the back of her ankle and legs when a pot of boiling broth rocked on the stove and spilled. Employees were instructed to slow down and to take more care around stoves. All sauces and soups will be made in larger kettles that would be less apt to splash.
  9. A custodian slipped on stairs in Clark Hall. The stairs were dry. He doesn’t remember if he missed a step or not.
  10. A dining services wait staff pinched her finger coming out of an elevator carrying trays. The lights were out and this threw her spatial awareness off. Instructed to keep all lights on in areas where people are still working.
  11. A custodian in Thompson Chapel strained the middle of his back while attempting to turn on lights at the main west door. He tripped on a rolled up walk off matt that was left in the wrong place after a piano recording. Light switch is in a bad spot and will consult electricians about moving it.
  12. A Second cook suffered a strain in his lower back while bending to put a case of product away. Bent at the waist instead of the knees. No loss of work. Proper bending recommended.
  13. Librarian suffered a strain in the back while attempting to shelve a book. Nothing unusual for the cause. Just plain old bad luck.

Additional New Business:

  • Bob Briggs reported the SPRING FLING offering of CPR classes. April 20th for ADULTS and April 27th for INFANTS. Books were purchased and will sell for $10.00 each for the ADULT only version and $12.50 for the PEDIATRIC version. An email to past students for the pediatric version. This class will work as the annual update as well.
  • Judi mentioned the frost heaves that she thought warranted cones to alert the public. Adriana mentioned one as well. After several phone calls to two departments I emailed Joe and said TAG you’re it!
  • Kim and Judi discussed the slip stripping on the stairs at Vogt House. This needs to be addressed again since the snow took its toll there.

Next meeting: Tuesday, April 19, noon, Faculty House
