Williams College Employee Safety Committee Meeting

Attending: George Aitken, Cheryl Brewer, Bob Briggs, Lisa Briggs, Gail Burda, Adriana Cozzolino, Scott Duncan, Pat Mancuso, Pete Mazzacco, Norm Parker, Dennis Richard, Julie Seitel
Absent: Michael Chapman, Gary Lohnes, Kris Maloney, Joe Moran, Jay Racela
Old Business:
- All old business was tabled until the next meeting.
New Business:
Incident Reports submitted to the committee this month:
- A dishwasher cut left little finger on a chipped plate while removing the plate from a stack. Recommended Corrective Action (RCA): remove all chipped plates from service.
- A cook’s assistant strained lower back while lifting dishes from a lower cupboard. Cause: poor lifting technique. RCA: proper lifting techniques were reviewed with employee and employee further advised to get help lifting heavy loads.
- A Faculty House custodian strained lower back while trying to move couch by himself. RCA: seek help when moving large heavy furniture.
- A Dining Services employee strained back while slipping on wet floor and grabbing for something to break fall. RCA: employee was advised to wear slip-resistant shoes when washing floor (the employee was wearing such shoes). Further reminded to put out “wet floor” signs.
- A Dining Services employee sprained pinky of right hand after slipping on water near the dish machine and trying to stop the fall. RCA: Manager will check on water coming out of dishwasher. It is a new machine. Joe will also follow up.
- A Facilities employee injured left collar bone when a hot water heater fell off a Bilko door unit. No RCA.
Additional New Business:
- There was some discussion about painted crosswalk across from the college daycare building. People are crossing the street often at that location and visibility from cars is poor. Norm will follow up.
