Employee Safety Committee Meeting

Old Business:
- Malfunctioning snow-melt grid in parking garage drive will be repaired in the spring. Joe reported that salt is handling the problem fine until then.
- Stairs at Driscoll: being repaired.
- Letter to town regarding parking: it was decided that people having expressed concerns to the Committee would be notified that it is a town issue and they should direct their concerns there.
- Dodd loading dock: gutters have been repaired, effort will be made through powerwashing to keep the deck less slippery.
- Mission Park loading dock: new grating has been installed and it is much improved.
- Norm reported that the Sit Safe program at the library was well attended.
New Business:
Incident Reports submitted to the committee this month:
- A custodian, while dumping water from a mop bucket into a sink, suffered pain in lower back. Follow-up: initial recommendation was to put less water in the mop bucket, but the employee said the bucket was only half full. The second recommendation was to lower the sink which will be looked into. Considered an accident.
- A custodian was injured when a tank of the new deicer blew up. Follow-up: it was a quality control problem with the manufacturer.
- A Dining Services employee suffered a bruised right foot after dropping a metal tray on it. Follow-up: carelessness.
- A library employee suffered neck, back and shoulder pain for several years. Follow-up: take the Sit Safe course.
- A temporary waitstaff employee, after kneeling down to pick up a tray of dishes, suffered knee pain upon standing. Follow-up: don't fill the trays so much and review proper lifting techniques.
- A Dining Services employee slipped on icy sidewalk. Follow-up: true accident.
- A Dining Services dishwasher, while opening a lid on a five gallon pail with a screwdriver, slipped and punctured palm. Follow-up: use proper tool.
- A Dining Services employee was carrying a punchbowl filled with hot cider when it cracked and broke, cutting the employee's pinky and burning the employee's hands. Follow-up: use serving cart and make sure containers are designed for hot liquids. Joe will follow up.
- Similar incident to # 1 above.
- A Dining Services employee, while reaching for something on a top shelf, suffered a side spasm. Follow-up: don't rush, take the time to get a stepladder.
