Employee Safety Committee Minutes Aug. 17, 2004

Employee Safety Committee Meeting

Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004 @ B&G Conference Room

Attending: George Aitken, Janet Bartlett, Cheryl Brewer, Bob Briggs, Cosmo Catalano, Michael Chapman, Adriana Cozzolino, Kris Maloney, Pete Mazzacco, Michelle Migdal, Joe Moran, Norm Parker, Dennis Richard, Judi Willette

Absent: Kim Brown, Judy Kocsis, Gary Lohnes

Old Business:

  • CPR course offering: Bob reported he plans to hold a course in November or December, more info next meeting. Reminder: recertification is needed every two years.
  • Sit Safe, etc. programs: Joe reported a course will be offered in the fall, details to follow.
  • Expiration of terms: Report from Cheryl: "Please note in the minutes that Kim is 'entertaining' the idea of assuming the position of chair and will give us her decision on the 21st at our next meeting."
  • Wooden steps at 63 Park: Joe is examining these and other exterior wooden steps around campus.
  • Extension cord hazard at Mark Hopkins: Joe reported that if the students move the furniture around, they need the cords. Currently there is no solution other than caution.

New Business:
Accident Reports submitted to the committee this month:

  1. An employee had an ergonomic-related problem. We made changes to her workstation and had follow up with Dr. May. The employee does not work in the summer so now that she has returned to work we will follow to see how things are going.
  2. A Dining Services employee suffered a pulled muscle. Follow up: not using proper lifting techniques.
  3. An employee suffered a cut while removing a dowel pin in the machine shop. Follow up: true accident.
  4. An employee suffered pulled muscles while pushing equipment. Follow up: true accident.
  5. A dining Services employee suffered a cut finger and thumb while cutting pineapple. Follow up: true accident.
  6. An employee suffered a left wrist strain while pulling a recycling bag onto cart. Follow up: true accident.
  7. A Dining Services employee was carrying a plate, tripped and fell on broken plate and cut left hand. Follow up: true accident.
  8. An employee cut tip of ring finger with pruners. Follow up: pruning procedures are being reviewed.

Additional New Business:

  • There are now three portable defibrillators at security and four at athletics.
  • Joe commented that for quite some time various parts of the campus will be torn up and that he is monitoring these areas daily. He reiterated to the Committee that if any legitimate safety concerns are brought to our attention, we should notify his office immediately rather than waiting for the next meeting.

Dining Services Safety Committee:

  • No report.

Next meeting: Tuesday, Sept. 21, noon at the Faculty House.
