Employee Safety Committee Meeting
Tuesday, April 20, 2004 @ The Faculty House
Attending: George Aitken, Janet Bartlett, Cheryl Brewer, Kim Brown, Cosmo Catalano, Adriana Cozzolino, Judy Kocsis, Gary Lohnes, Michelle Migdal, Joe Moran, Norm Parker, Dennis Richard
Absent: Bob Briggs, Michael Chapman, Kris Maloney, Pete Mazzacco, Judi Willette
Old Business:
- CPR course offering: no update.
- The handrails on both Upper and Lower Chapel Parking Lots have been extended.
- Sit safe: Previous sessions with Dr. May and B&G and Dining Services have come out of their respective budgets. Joe is contemplating a campus-wide sit safe program in which Library staff could participate if the Library does not wish to finance its own program. Would not happen until summer. Joe will confer with Norm concerning Library interests. Cosmo volunteered to coordinate the event with Kris and Dr. May.
- Joe reported that all of the cigarette receptacles have disappeared except for one found in a dorm room. Joe suggested inter-collegiate souvenir-hunters were the most likely culprits. Since the receptacles cost three hundred dollars each, replacement is on hold.
- There have been no new incidents at the parking garage since the Committee's March meeting.
New Business:
Accident Reports submitted to the committee this month:
- An employee was injured falling up a flight of stairs. Follow up: true accident,
- An employee fell downward on a flight of stairs. Follow up: true accident.
- A dishwasher suffered a back strain from picking up a garbage bag that was too heavy. Follow up: do not overload trash bags.
- A staff member suffered a strain pushing an overloaded book cart. Follow up: make two trips.
- A carpenter suffered a cut hand. Follow up: unsafe knife practice.
- A groundsman suffered a back strain moving flooring rolls at the pool. Follow up: two people were on the job, but still clearly hazardous. Joe will investigate.
Additional New Business:
- Members have been asked to bring ideas for monthly "safety tips" to be posted on the Committee website.
Dining Services Safety Committee:
- Jody reported that Bob Volpi has designated Mark Petrino to oversee the Dining Services Safety Committee because of Bob's time constraints. Jody feels optimistic that the committee will now get fully underway.
- Jody reported that the committee was considering keeping track of consecutive accident-free days with the idea of making awards. Joe cautioned that while keeping track and making some sort of acknowledgement was a good idea, it can possibly lead to non-reporting and/or insufficient treatment of injuries. Joe will follow up with Mark.
Next meeting: Wednesday, May 18 at The Faculty House.
