Employee Safety Committee Meeting

Tuesday, April 19, 2005 @ Faculty House

Attending: George Aitken, Janet Bartlett, Cheryl Brewer, Kim Brown, Cosmo Catalano, Michael Chapman, Kris Maloney, Michelle Migdal, Joe Moran, Norm Parker, Dennis Richard, Judi Willette

Absent: Bob Briggs, Adriana Cozzolino, Judy Kocsis, Gary Lohnes, Pete Mazzacco

Old Business:

  • Malfunctioning snow-melt grid in parking garage drive will be repaired in the spring, exact time TBA.
  • Joe reported that there is little money to repair sidewalk frost heaves—much of what is available is going to sidewalks around the B&L Building. For now, cones are being put out in hopes that some of the heaves will settle down with warmer weather.
  • Ann Skinner is planning a training session for Sciences custodians in April.

New Business:
Incident Reports submitted to the committee this month:

  1. A B&G custodian splashed bowl cleaner in left eye while opening the flip-up top. Follow-up: employee was cautioned to keep face back while opening the container, but there was no mention of wearing safety glasses. Dick McMahon is following up.
  2. A Dining Services cook cut middle finger of left hand on a knife that had been left out. Follow-up: put knives away when not in use.
  3. A B&G tradesman working at the hockey rink suffered a muscle strain in lower back while reaching over and down to tighten a screw. It is an awkward place to get to and Joe is looking into solutions.
  4. A co-op student painter got drywall dust in left eye while cleaning up in Spencer. Follow-up: told to wear safety glasses.
  5. A B&G EH&S employee struck left eye on a door jamb. Follow-up: true accident.
  6. A mechanical trades technician strained his pinky while kneeling down. Follow-up: accident.
  7. A security officer slipped on ice while exiting Lambert bruising and straining lower back and left elbow (which broke the fall). Follow-up: steps not well lit, ice should have been dealt with, employee cautioned to be more aware of conditions.

Additional New Business:

  • There was no additional new business.

Dining Services Safety Committee:

  • There was no report from Jodi.

Next meeting: Tuesday, May 24, noon, '62 Center for Theatre & Dance. A tour will follow the meeting.
