Williams College Employee Safety Committee Meeting

Tuesday, April 18, 2006 @ The Faculty House

Attending: George Aitken, Cheryl Brewer, Gail Burda, Cosmo Catalano, Michael Chapman, Adriana Cozzolino, Scott Duncan, Kris Maloney, Norm Parker, Jay Racela, Dennis Richard

Absent: Bob Briggs, Lisa Briggs, Gary Lohnes, Pat Mancuso, Pete Mazzacco, Joe Moran

Old Business:

  • Window access to deck at Prospect: Norm reported that the windows had been fixed in order to not open fully. Students then accessed the roof from a student’s room, so signs were placed in that room stating that it is a $250.00 fine if they are found on the roof.
  • Meeting with Bob Volpi regarding Dining Services accident record: Adriana reported that the meeting seemed to go well and that Bob was receptive to maintaining adequate staff levels and will meet with managers.

New Business:

Incident Reports submitted to the committee this month:

  1. A custodian bruised left arm while lifting a window. The sash cord broke and the window fell on the arm. Norm reported that Joe told him that old sash-weight windows are scheduled for replacement.
  2. A custodian suffered bruises and strains to ankle, back and fingers after stepping off sidewalk to let three students pass. The custodian lost footing and fell.
  3. A custodian suffered spasms to mid-back while bending over to clean shower. Recommended corrective action: be more careful bending over.
  4. A Dining Services cook suffered bruised fingers on left hand after reflexively dropping a hot plate on the hand, not realizing the plate was still hot. Recommended corrective action: always use gloves or pot holders on something that might be hot.
  5. An Athletics trainer suffered bruised and cut little toe while trying to get cart out of shed. The shed was crowded with other equipment and foot got wedged in door jamb. Rearranging the storage is being looked into.

Additional New Business:

  • Scott reported that some custodians had expressed concerns to him about storing various things in the attic of JRC. There is much general clutter and little adequate storage and access to the attic is awkward. Norm said he would pass the concern on to Joe.
  • Cheryl said that IT was organizing a computer green-up day when it would be accepting drop-offs of obsolete computers and will erase hard-drives. There was some discussion about the logistics of the drop-off and best location. She said information will be publicized May first, the event itself is scheduled for May 22nd.

Dining Services Safety Committee:

  • No new business.

Next meeting: Tuesday May 16, noon @ The Faculty House
