Silverkeeper backup using a Western Digital Drive.

1. Plug in the external drive. The drive will show up as an orange icon on your desktop.

2. Run Disk Utility (from Applications: Utilities) and Erase the drive. MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE THE EXTERNAL DRIVE (ORANGE). It will be named something like 155 GB WD. For Volume Format choose Mac Extended Journaled.

3. After formatting, open the orange harddrive icon from the desktop and create a folder called Mac Backup.

4. Install Silverkeeper from this sk114.dmg file.

5. After installation, run SilverKeeper from the Applications folder.

6. Create a New Set. Choose to ignore permissions on the next few steps. Choose your Macintosh HD as source. Choose Mac Backup on the external drive as destination.

7. Click Schedule tab. Set for daily at 12:30pm (or whatever time is convenient). IMPORTANT: Click the Exclusions tab. Add Items and put in Applications, Library and System from the Macintosh HD (otherwise the backup is way too slow).

8. Quit the program (it will ask you to save). Reopen and click Go to force a first backup. It will take a long time, but you can do other things while the program runs.
