The Office for Information Technology is pleased to provide a wireless network connection to registered users of the Williams Network. Wireless at Williams is currently available in all buildings on campus.

Connecting to Wireless

Connecting to the Williams wireless network is easy. Just follow these steps:

  • Associate to an access point with an SSID of Student or FacStaff (depending on who you are).
  • Open a web browser.
  • Login with your email username and password.

For more detailed information on connecting to wireless at Williams, please visit the Connecting section.

Using Wireless

Wireless connections are inherently insecure, so we will require the use of secure applications when connecting to Williams servers. For example, you will need to use:

  • Secure Shell (SSH) instead of Telnet.
  • Secure FTP (SFTP) instead of FTP.
  • Secure POP email (S-POP) instead of regular POP3 email.
  • Secure IMAP email (S-IMAP) instead of regular IMAP email.

We've included tutorials on how to accomplish these things, so check out the Applications section for more information. In case you were wondering, IMP (webmail) will work just fine the way you normally use it.

Got questions?

We've tried hard to answer most of your questions through the links on the right. The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section includes answers on problems regarding dead zones, roaming, login problems, and more, so please check there if you can't find your answer elsewhere. Clicking on a link will take you to the appropriate entry in the wireless glossary.

If you have trouble after following the guides and the FAQ please contact the Student support desk at x3088 (stchelp@williams.edu) or the Faculty/Staff support desk at x4090.
