2. Click on the "Prefs" button.
3. Select "File Saving" from the list on the right of the preferences window and then select "TIFF" as your default file format.
NOTE: you may have to restart the Nikon software for your settings to be applied. If this is the case, exit Nikon scan, re-launch the program as shown in step #1 and then proceed to the next step.
4. Click the "Tools" button and then select "Tools Palette 1" from the drop-down menu.
5. On the "Tool Palette 1" window, Click on the triangle to the left of "Crop" to open the settings as seen to the right and make sure the settings look like this:
Keep this File Size: 36.0 MBytes
Scale: Automatically set by the "Resolution" setting (It should be automatically set at "52.93%")
Resolution: 4,000 Pixels/Inch
NOTE: At the beginning of each scanning session, you may want to click the "Preview" button to ensure the entire surface of the slide is getting scanned.
6. On the "Tool Palette 1" window, click on the triangle to the left of "Scanner Extras" to open the settings as seen to the right and make sure the settings look like this:
Set Manual Focus Adjustment to 15
Pixel Data Size: 16 PhotoShop will open these files as 16bit color, giving the best color depth. Images can later be converted to 8bit if required
7. Now you are ready to do a batch scan. Click on the "Scanner" menu, then select "Slide Feeder..."
8. Enter the number of slides to be scanned.
9. Click the "Scan" button
10. Verify the settings as shown to the right and then click the "OK" button in the "Batch Scan" window
11. Verify the File Saving Options:
Prefix and Suffix: defined by project
Number of Digits: 3 unless the number of slides with the same Prefix and Suffix is greater than 1000, then you'd go to 4. Better to have an extra leading zero than too few.
Starting Index: Set to the last slide scanned with the current Prefix and Suffix +1.
Directory: Verify that this is the folder that you want to scan to. You may want to create a separate folder for each session.
NOTE: The "Scratch" or "Scratch 2" drives are fairly safe, but other users on that machine COULD delete your work as it is temporary storage that everyone has read/write access to. The best and safest solution is to save the files to an external hard drive and also to back-up the files regularly to CD or DVD.
12. Click "OK".
Should you encounter a slide jam:
- Carefully clear the jam
- Verify the last slide that was scanned
- Queue up the slides that have not scanned
- Set "Starting Index" to the number of the last successful slide +1
13. NOTE: If the scanning was successful the properties of a single image should look like this (number may vary slightly):
14. To view your images, go to the File menu and click "Open" and select the folder/directory you saved your images to, then select the file name you gave to your images.
Note: To edit the images of the slides, you may want to use Adobe PhotoShop.
