Mac OS X - Automatic Updates:

Periodically, Apple releases updates to your computer's software. Using the Software Update feature of System Preferences, you can get updates immediately and schedule when Mac OS X checks for updates. Because some updates are prerequisites for others, you may need to use Software Update more than once to get all desired updates. In order to update your operating system, please follow these steps:

  1. Open the apple menu (left-click on the blue Apple icon in the upper left) and choose the System Preferences option.
  2. Open the Software update icon in the View Menu.
  3. There are three things you will need to do on this screen. First, click the radio button next to the Automatically check for updates text. Second, choose the Daily option from the Check for Updates pop-up menu. Third, please click on the Check now button.
  4. The software will search for any available updates and then show you a list. The necessary updates (those relevant for your computer) are highlighted in blue. Make sure the blue checkboxes are checked, then click on the install button, to begin the update process.
  5. You will be prompted with an authentication screen. If you have forgotten the default password, please call x4090 if you are a faculty or staff member. In case you changed the accounts on your machine, please insert the new login and password, then press OK.

  6. Click the Agree button to accept the EULA.
  7. You should now see your updates being downloaded and installed.
  8. At the end of the update process, you will be prompted to either shut down or restart your machine. Choose Restart in order to reboot your machine.
  9. After the machine has restarted, please repeat this process, to check if any additional updates are required. When finished, please continue to the next tutorial!
