Laptop Engraving:
All of the security steps listed thus far will not help you if you get your laptop stolen. The Office of Information Technology recommends having your laptops engraved by Williams College Security to increase the chances of getting your laptop back should it be stolen, and to deter thieves from taking your laptop in the first place. Several students have had their laptops stolen from their dorm rooms within the past few years. The process is short, painless, and free! Here are the quick facts:
- Laptop engraving takes approximately 5-7 minutes.
- You can tell the Security Dispatcher in the basement of Hopkins Hall that you want your laptop (or desktop machine, other valuable, etc) engraved anytime between 7:30am-3:30pm, Monday through Friday.
- Security recommends that your driver's license number and state (assuming that your license number and social security number are different) be used in the engraving, but they will engrave whichever characters you want.
- The engraving is usually placed in 2 separate locations, shown in red on the pictures below. The engraving on the top of the laptop (second picture) is much larger, while the side engraving is smaller and more inconspicuous.
