Installing Print Services for UNIX

You can use Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel to install Print Services for UNIX. This allows Windows XP to print to lpr.williams.edu then the queue name, instead of printing directly to the printer.  Macs have this ability built in.

To install Print Services for UNIX on Windows XP

  1. Start the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
  2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  3. Click Other Network File and Print Services, and then click Details.
  4. Click to select the Print Services for UNIX check box, and then click OK.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish the installation.

Add a printer via LPR

To add and configure a port for printing to a TCP/IP printer:

  1. Click Start, point to Printers, and then click Add Printer to start the Add Printer Wizard.
  2. Click Next, click Local printer, (uncheck Automatically detect..) and then click Next.
  3. Click Create a new port, and then click LPR port . Click Next.
  4. Type in lpr.williams.edu for the name of the server, and the name of the print queue on that server e.g. lw-jesup-210
  5. Click Next until you can click the printer manufacturer and printer model. When you have completed all of your selections, click Finish to add the new printer port and printer.
