Hp Scanjet 8290- Scanning with the Automatic Document Feeder

The purpose of this procedure is to scan text documents comprised of several sheets loose sheets and convert them to a PDF and/or Word document.

Important Note:
Remember to ensure that Duplex switch is on the right setting. If double-sided documents, switch to the left if facing the scanner, single-sided switch to the right. The location of switch is shown below.

PROCEDURE:

  • Log on the Workstation using Unix Id and Password
  • Go into "My Computer" and create a file onto your preferred drive:
    • Public or Shared Folder
    • F:/ Drive
    • Scratch Drive (S:/) - this is specific to the workstation and is cleaned out by administration. It is recommended that you make a copy of this folder onto your account, in addition to a CD or Disk.
  • Launch Omni page from the start menu
  • When the program launches, open Tools/Options/Scanners
  • Press Setup
  • Select hp Scanjet Scanner and click Next
  • Select hp Scanjet 8200 series and click Next
  • Select No, and click Next
  • Press Finish
  • At this point, all windows within the program are closed. Click the "OCR Wizard button"
  • Choose the settings as described on the picture below
  • Choose the settings as described on the picture below
  • Choose the settings as described on the picture below
  • Choose the settings as described on the picture below
  • Choose the settings as described on the picture below
  • At this point, the Scanner will start scanning the pages automatically. Wait until if
    finishes.
  • Once the scanner is finished, it will prompt you to proofread the file for possible scanning errors. The window, similar to the one depicted below will pop up. It is the Media Lab policy to leave the proofreading to the person for whom the scanning is done. Accordingly, you will close that window.
  • The scanning process is completed. You do, however, need to save the files (not saving them would defeat the purpose of the whole procedure ). We want to save a file as a Word document, and then we want to save it as a PDF document (i.e. you will produce 2 documents).
    Hence:
    • Go to File/Save As
    • Navigate to the folder you have created your preferred drive
    • Name document the same way as you named the file.
    • Navigate through "Files of type" menu
    • Select "Microsoft Word 2000, XP (*.doc)
    • The save window should look something like this:
    • Press "OK"

Now, you need to do the same procedure again, but this time save the file as the .pdf (i.e. when you navigate down the "Files of type" menu, you select PDF (*.pdf).

At this point you have two files in your folder. If you would like to save the files onto a CD then insert blank disk into CD-RW Drive (E:/). Note: When burning CD, use the Nero Express - don't just drag the files on the CD drive!!!).
