How to Format Images for Use in Final Cut Pro
Usually you will be dealing with DV-NTSC video formats. For these formats, the film size is usually set at 720 x 480 pixels. There are different steps you can take depending on what you want.
If you are importing an image that is small and you don't mind having a black area surrounding your image, just import the image AS IS into FCP. You do not need to change the image size.
However, if you want an image of highest quality (with proportions in tack), when creating an image in Photoshop, you need to set the frame size at 720 x 534. To do this you can go to file < new < preset sizes < 720 x 534 NTSC DV/DVD. OR if you want to adjust an image size you can go to image < image size < pixel dimensions and then adjust the pixels there.
Another option is to create an image size of 640 x 480. However, after importing the image into FCP, you may need to zoom in on the image. This can be done by going to your preview window and clicking on the motion tab and then to basic motion < scale. There you will be able to adjust the zoom size of your picture.
A NOTE ON RESOLUTION: For FCP, your image resolution does not matter. It is however important to note that most digitalized film projects are at a 72dpi resolution. Therefore, if you want your image to match the resolution of your film you should also set your image at 72dpi.
