Searching for Williams Email Addresses (LDAP, Ph, Finger)

New email clients use LDAP (Light Directory Access Protocol) to retrieve email addresses from a database.

To add this service:

Outlook Express

  1. Go to Tools | Accounts | "Add" button on right -> Directory Service
  2. Use server: ldap.williams.edu
  3. Do not check addresses using this service (all off-campus emails will fail)
  4. Click Finish
  5. Select ldap.williams.edu on left, then Properties on right.
  6. Choose the Advanced tab
  7. In search base, put: o=williams (Note: "o" is the letter o, not a number)
  8. Then, when composing a message, type the name to search for in the To field and click the Check Names button (looks like a person with a check next to them)

Outlook

  1. Go to Tools | E-mail Accounts | "Add a new directory or address book"
  2. Internet Directory Service (LDAP)
  3. Server Name: ldap.williams.edu
  4. Click More Settings
  5. Click the Search tab
  6. In search base, put: o=williams (Note: "o" is the letter o, not a number)
  7. Then, when composing a message, type the name to search for in the To field and click the Check Names button (looks like a person with a check next to them)

Mac OSX Mail

  1. Go to Mail | Preferences | Composing button
  2. If you want the mail client to auto-search for Williams addresses as you type, check the box
  3. Click the Configure LDAP button
  4. Click the Plus sign
  5. For name put Williams LDAP, for server put ldap.williams.edu
  6. In search base, put: o=williams (Note: "o" is the letter o, not a number)

Eudora Light uses Ph and Finger, which are also commands that can also be run after telnetting to unix.williams.edu. Proper settings are:

  • Tools:Options:Hosts: (PC), Special:Settings:Hosts: (Mac)
  • Ph is: ns.williams.edu
  • Finger is: colrain.williams.edu

To look for an address, pull up Directory services from the Tools or Special menu.

On a PC you can look people up without using Outlook Express by going to Start | Search | For People.
