Windows XP - Eliminating Popups:
Popups are one of the most annoying features of the web, and they products they advertise are often linked to Spyware and Adware, among other things. Stopping popups can make your internet browsing a much more pleasant and safer experience. Google offers an Internet Explorer add-on that includes a built-in popup blocker.
- To get this free tool, open up a web browser and go to http://toolbar.google.com. Look for a picture like the one below and click on the "Download Google Toolbar" link.
- Save the installer file someplace easy to access - like your Desktop. Then double-click on the file or click the "Open" button when the download has finished.
- Click Agree to accept the Terms and Conditions.
- Check the radio button next to "Disable Advanced Features." Then click Next.
- Now check the radio button next to "Don't close Internet Explorer windows." Then click Next.
- The Google Toolbar Installer will now open up a new Internet Explorer window that has the Toolbar at the top. Read the instructions on the displayed page and then move on to the next step.
- Click on the Options button on the Google Toolbar.
- Check the Popup Blocker box to enable blocking. Then click OK.
- You should now see a section on the Google Toolbar that shows the number of popups that have been blocked. If you ever want a popup to be displayed, hold down control and click on the link that opens the popup.
- The Google Toolbar should stop most, but not all, popups. Please remember that you should never install a program from a web site unless you are absolutely sure that you need and want it. A good example of this would be the Microsoft Windows Update installer from http://www.windowsupdate.com.
