Applications or computers that have specific bandwidth requirements

Williams College uses a bandwidth shaper to prioritize and control traffic that is entering or leaving the college's internet connection(s). Many well known applications are currently being prioritized, but there are, also, applications in use that the bandwith shaper considers to be "noise", thus having little or no priority. If the Williams' user community has specific needs for bandwidth, please contact the Network and Systems group of the Office for Information Technology.

If modifications need to be made to the bandwidth shaper, then we need to know the application details/requirements. The following will give us a good start on any modifications that might need to be made:

  • What is the ip address of the network attached device at Williams that requires bandwidth?
  • What is the ip address (or DNS name) of the network attached device NOT at Williams that is participating in the application?
  • Is this a client/server model?
    • Is the client or server at Williams?
  • What is the name of the application being used?
  • What is the transport of that application?
    • UDP?
    • TCP?
  • Is any buffer time needed (either internal or external)?
  • What is the minimum bandwidth of the application?
  • What is the maximum bandwidth of the application?
We realize that all of this information is not readily available, but the more information supplied, the more successful we will be in fulfilling the application bandwidth needs.
